Back in 2011, I found myself sketching building designs on napkins during a particularly rainy Vancouver evening. Sounds cliche, right? But that's honestly how this whole thing kicked off.
I'd just returned from a year working in Norway and Sweden, totally blown away by how they merge traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge sustainability. The way those old timber structures stood proud for centuries while new builds integrated nature instead of fighting against it... that really stuck with me.
Vancouver felt like the perfect place to bring those ideas home. We've got the climate, the landscape, and honestly, people here actually care about building things that'll matter in fifty years, not just next quarter's profits.
Started small - a residential reno here, a consultation there. But word spread once folks saw we weren't just slapping together cookie-cutter designs. We actually listen, dig into what makes each site unique, and yeah, we push back when something doesn't make sense environmentally or structurally.
Now we're fourteen years in with a team that shares this obsession with thoughtful design. We've restored heritage buildings that were one permit away from demolition, designed homes that generate more energy than they use, and helped businesses create spaces their employees actually want to work in.
"Architecture isn't about ego or trends. It's about creating spaces that respect their surroundings, serve their purpose, and age gracefully. Everything else is just noise."
- Marcus Thorvaldsen, Founder & Principal Architect
We're not your typical architecture firm. Our crew brings together traditional craftsmanship knowledge with modern sustainable practices - and we've got the scars and stories to prove it.
Marcus Thorvaldsen launches Runeblade Haven with one drafting table, a used laptop, and way too much coffee. First project? A garage conversion that's still standing (thankfully).

Hired our first team member - Elena Chen, who basically saved us from organizational chaos. Also landed our first commercial project, a boutique hotel in Gastown that taught us more than any textbook ever could.
Staff: 4 | Projects: 18Completed our first major heritage restoration - a 1920s warehouse converted into live-work lofts. This became our signature specialty. Brought on Karl Bergstrom, whose grandfather was a master carpenter in Oslo.
Staff: 7 | Projects: 31
Achieved LEED certification for three projects in one year. Started offering dedicated sustainable building consulting. Aisha Mahmoud joined us after working with Snohetta in Norway - total game changer for our technical capabilities.
Staff: 11 | Projects: 47Won the BC Wood Design Award for our Cedar Grove Residential Complex. Finally moved into our own office space on Granville - designed by us, naturally. Started mentoring emerging architects through AIBC.

We'll tell you when your budget doesn't match your vision, or when a design choice might cause problems down the road. No sugarcoating, no runaround.
We design for decades, not trends. Every material choice, every system integration considers how it'll perform in 20, 30, 50 years.
Not just a buzzword for us. Every project gets analyzed for energy efficiency, material sustainability, and environmental impact - it's non-negotiable.
We work with skilled tradespeople who care about their work. Quality construction isn't just about pretty renderings - it's about execution.
Let's grab a coffee and see if we're a good fit. No pressure, no sales pitch.
